It is interesting that they don’t publish any comparisons of these two data sets as they would be able to make comparisons on a county basis. By working with both USDA data resources I was able to find 370 good comparisons of organic and total data for the same crop in the same state and where the organic represented at least 20 acres. If a populist director like Steven Spielberg—inventor of the summer blockbuster, pioneer in prestige spectacle filmmaking—can ever really embody the second half of Hollywood’s “one for them, one for me” commercial/artistic equation, his latest feature, Bridge of Spies, might fall under that category. Previous to Bridge of Spies, which is about the real-life civilian lawyer who negotiated a politically charged prisoner exchange during the Cold War, there was, of course, Schindler’s List, Spielberg’s career-changing, harrowing Holocaust drama about Oskar Schindler, who saved 1,200 Jews from certain death in concentration camps by fraudulently employing them in his factories.
And then there was 2012’s Lincoln, Spielberg’s hushed, reverent study of the Great Emancipator. The subject of Bridge of Spies, James Donovan, was perhaps a more minor hero than those two Great Men, but what he managed to do in late 1950s East Berlin was still pretty film worthy.
It’s a story that Spielberg and his screenwriters—Matt Charman, Joel and Ethan Coen—tell with a solid sense of purpose, even if the film doesn’t quite hit the emotional beats it’s aiming for. But even the mighty Hanx can’t keep this movie’s chilliness fully at bay. Though, I’m not entirely sure “chilliness” is really the right word. Rather, Bridge of Spies is an interior, introverted kind of movie, composed mainly of scenes of men talking in rooms about big, faraway things. People expecting a Steven Spielberg spy thriller might be a little disappointed.
